Techne Engineering was engaged to provide the structural design for a two-storey air-space development to an existing reinforced concrete building in North London, supporting its conversion from commercial to residential use.
As with all air-space projects, a detailed understanding of the existing structure was critical. Our team carried out thorough investigations to assess the capacity of the building and verify that it could safely support the proposed extension. This assessment informed the design of a new steel frame structure positioned above the existing building.
The design addressed key challenges including structural stability, load distribution, and integration between the new steel frame and the existing concrete structure. Careful consideration was also given to construction sequencing to ensure the works could be carried out safely and efficiently.
We provided a comprehensive structural package, including drawings, specifications, and calculation reports, enabling the project team to progress the development with confidence.
This project demonstrates how well-considered structural engineering can unlock additional development potential within constrained urban sites.
