Tudor Close – Renovating and Extending a Mid-Century Family Home in North London

Tudor Close involved the complete renovation and extension of an existing mid-century family home in North London. Working closely with the architects at ROAR, the project transformed the property into a brighter, more functional family home while respecting and complementing the character of the original building.

The brief was to create additional living space and improve the flow between rooms, while opening up the internal layout to better suit modern family life. The design introduced both side and rear extensions, creating generous new living areas and strengthening the connection between the home and garden.

One of the key engineering challenges was achieving the desired additional space without placing unnecessary loads on the existing structure. Through careful assessment of the property, we identified opportunities to utilise timber construction wherever possible. By reducing the overall weight of the extensions, we were able to justify the reuse of much of the existing foundation system, avoiding extensive and costly foundation upgrades.

This approach also allowed us to minimise the number of new steel elements required throughout the structure. Not only did this improve the efficiency of the design, but it also helped deliver a more cost-effective solution for the client while reducing the overall embodied carbon associated with the construction works.

The collaborative relationship between the design and engineering teams was fundamental to the success of the project. Working alongside ROAR Architects from the early stages allowed us to develop structural solutions that supported the architectural vision without compromising the openness and simplicity of the spaces.

The completed home benefits from significantly improved natural light, enhanced circulation throughout the building, and a series of carefully integrated extensions that feel like a natural continuation of the original property.
